Mutliple domain names for one site

Say I have a site about Dog Food, dogfood.com
Is there any point registering say, bestdogfood.com or puppydogfood.com and point them to the dogfood.com site ?

yes, you would register them to keep competitors from trying to step into your niche.

then later down the road you could develop each site if you wanted.

if you are optimizing your site for those keywords as well, you can go buy them and do a 301 redirect

You could also try making a mini-site out of each of the "alternate" domains. Keep each mini-site focused on one keyword or one product and feed all traffic to your main site. This way you have focused and relevant inbound links and making your own "traffic source".

yeye, register them for sure, not just because off competitors, or linking them to your main site, you should develop them too, implementing different tactics, maybe some will work better than main site.

open accounts on web 2.0 properties and register free domains with your keywords as well, you'll need them for promotion your other domains.

register the others and stick some articles on, get 100k links to each one, see if they stick for a few months, then push link juice to money site.
