I know a lot of you guys travel/are mobile/are not behind a "normal" desk everyday.

I am looking into traveling a lot coming up and would like to preplan out my "must have's" to make this happen without a ton of headache.

Here is what I have so far:

1. Laptop
2. USB Modem ( for 3g wireless ) + cell phone for tethering
3. VNC connections to servers/home desktops/home laptops
4. Looking at Evernote or some kind of mobile note taking platform.

Can you guys think of anything else that you like to have or must have while traveling and being mobile?

Thanks ahead of time.

Depends on how remote/mobile you want to be.. I've been considering getting a e-reader.

this will be a lot of suburban to city stuff, nothing remote like out in a rural area.

I will be moving around a lot though

Some suggestions:

- Portable wifi hub that you can plug into an available ethernet connection
- Plug-in external battery unit
- A cheap netbook as a backup computer (optional)
- Rugged weatherproof laptop bag (it rains in suburbia too, even if it's just on the way from a convenience store to your car - not to mention coffee)

Portable speaker
Extra laptop battery
Portable mouse
International Power Adapter
Credit Cards (duh)
Passport
Kindle (awesome for long flights, get some business books on it, you can tether it as well if you are crazy enough and have the 3g version)
Emergency numbers. If you are travelling to a foreign country, knowing the phone number of your embassy helps

dropbox + truecrypt + insured laptop = breathing easily

I recommend also ripping and uploading copies of software you use (can keep the serial numbers in the encrypted dropbox folder) and upload to a server. Keep the FTP details in the encrypted folder too

shit gets lost/stolen/whatever you can waltz into (in my case apple), clink down for a new laptop and have no issues getting CS5 / MS Office / whatver you use for software back onto the machine while being remote so long as you have a decent internet connection.

vps for all your work. this is pretty standard anyways but i wouldnt do any coding / spreadsheeting / documents locally when its $20 for a vps that can be ultra secure and available everywhere. you never know when you will lose/break your laptop. If your any bit tech savy i would suggest that over dropbox

you can also use the VPS as a secure proxy for ALL of your web browsing

That Truecypt is pretty slick had never heard of it and was just reading all about it. Very nice will start using that for sure.

the dude in the Kingpin book had his boxes encrypted with it. the feds had to bust his door down at a time he was far enough away from the power cords because if his drives had powered down they couldn't have broken the encryption.
