mumbarak has balls of steel

Its sad though about what is happening up there. I dont blame the people. How would you feel if you had the same affiliate manager for years who didn't make any change? Mubarak deserves what is happening. Unfortunately, the country is suffering.

Yes, I too see many similarities between the plight of the Egyptian people and my account at Hydra.

Oh no! Now he'll have to retire to Belize with his billions of dollars.

Poor guy.

yeah but with his tail between his legs.....

all these egomaniac clowns ( fidel, kim jong il, etc ) think them and only them can rule their country. 30 years was more than enough for this character

According to ABC, his family may be worth up to $70 billion. He started building his wealth when he was in the military. From the linked piece:

Experts say the wealth of the Mubarak family was built largely from military contracts during his days as an air force officer.

Reminds me of Smedley Butler's War Is A Racket.

I'd be totally fine leaving with "my tail between my legs" if it meant I got to keep billion$ and the only real consequence was I could never return to the sandbox that is Egypt. I think I could find some way to entertain myself...maybe...

Yeaaaaah, I think I'd make it somehow.

swiss banks have freezed his funds, let's hope they are returned back to the egyptian people

I'm not sure most people really understand what would happen if he stepped down right away.

"Absolute Chaos" wouldn't begin to describe it.

As much as he's been a dictator for the last 30 years, democracy won't take root right away if he resigned today. There would be a power vacuum...which would be filled with whoever had the manpower, firepower and was ruthless enough to take advantage of it.

Peace loving citizens don't fall into that category. Terrorist and militant groups do...as well as state-sanctioned groups such as the Iranian Republican Guard. I don't think any country stands to gain more from an abrupt succession than Iran.

A smooth and coordinated transfer of power via protected and neutral government elections gives peaceful groups the best opportunity at shaping a new Egyptian democracy (presuming elections happen as promised with minimal tampering.)

Looks like Mubarak stepped down, but left the military in charge.

There's an AP article that ironically states it was the end of 30 years of Authoritarian rule.

I'm pretty sure Military-run governments are by definition Authoritarian. ;)

apparently swiss government seized and frozen his assets. I think this is just "staged" announcement to divert attention towards his wealth. Even if he gives 10% cut to officials they are set for life. 100% sure he will be able to use all his money securely, am sure this was his agreement with US when he resigned.
