Most of the board is geared around affiliate and advertising income, but I'm sure there are other members who make money online through sales and services.

What are you doing to make money online that doesn't include affiliate and ad revenue?

I am developing and selling software and working on relaunching an online t-shirt retailer.

I am developing and selling software and working on relaunching an online t-shirt retailer.

For me it is ebay, and a large ecommerce site. I am trying to diversify by building doing adsense and affiliates.

I've sold a few of my products online, including an ebook through my blog. Its tough, and you have to develop the product in the first place.

I have also done some expiriments on selling t-shirts through one of my content sites. For all the effort involved, that wasn't worth it.

You're right about product development or e-comm. It does take longer than throwing up a page with a link. That said... as an affiliate you know that you are only making a small portion of the sales you generate. The profit as the seller is a lot higher. If you could take your affiliate marketing knowledge and apply it to marketing your own products, you could easily be making a lot more money.

The t-shirt market is tougher than people think. I haven't done much in the way of marketing my site, but the relaunch will address a lot of things I see all the sellers (and there are scores of them, including myself :p) doing wrong.

will you be printing them or outsourcing?

Oh I'm definitely not printing them myself. My current inventory has all been professionally printed. Self printing does not really make economic sense when you figure that you can order your shirts printed for just a few bucks each (< $10, varies by volume ordered). Unprinted blanks wouldn't cost much less.

What I plan on doing differently is all in the marketing not in the product.

I am not going to debate it but there are some serious downsides to the "only making a small portion of the sales you generate."

If you want to build up equity in a business, you have to own the site. But For all the "newbies" don't make the mistake of underestimating the work involved.

Referrals are the best way in my opinion. Make a solid referral and get paid for doing nothing for quite some time, it's absolutely wonderful! It's not easy, but once you get the hang of it you'll be amazed at what you can accomplish.

Referrals... as in getting a % of the income that the person you refer makes.... while you are drinking a Pina Colada in a resort in Mexico. Yep, that would be nice.

... did I mention we offer 2% referral revenue. So, you refer someone, you get 2% of their total revenue....ongoing.

Referrals is interesting when you concentrate on getting referrals. If once in a while someone signs up using my affiliate ID. it will not give me much financially regarding my opinion. Or you must be lucky & hitting the jack pot! For example - if you able to find an 'average' affiliate earning $10,000 per month, that's $200 referral revenue or a smaller affiliate earning $2000 gives you $40 revenue which is more likely you will find. Well, I guess drinking a Pina Colada in a resort in Mexico is still far away... It's not so easy to make money through affiliate referral as it looks like, you need to put some hard work into it in order to make a nice (extra) amount on a monthly basis unfortunately! :)

One month I made $1,800 from a couple of referrals that I had made 6 months beforehand. That was only 5% of what the people I referred made, meaning they made $36,000 from that ad network alone!

Up that to 5% and I may consider it, 2% is the lowest I've heard.

The point of the thread was to let you guys know that the affiliate game is not the only way there is to make money online. The merchants you are promoting are making a multiple of what you are making, so if you are successful, it might be a good idea to try and branch out into something more than an affiliate.

u r right. With only one referral, its just beer money on a sat night. However, if you concentrated on it, and not just one network, but referred to a few different networks with different types of programs, that could add up.

heh heh... there was a company that used to give 10% referral, but they also had the lowest payouts on their offers.

A few others do offer 2%, and some offer 5% for a limited time, but we have to stick to the 2% so we can offer a higher payout... which inturn would lead to your referral making more money... and you getting 2% of a bigger pie :)
