Do the majority of you just deal in affiliate marking and selling web domains? What about actually selling any products or services on your site? My girlfriend is a great designer and could sell many different things like handbags, purses, and womens clothing. We'd like to make a site, but right now she is in college for webdesign. What sources could we use to learn more on getting started before she is even finished with schooling, or should we just wait?

I'm planning on leveraging my traffic at some point to develop those multiple streams of income you hear about. It makes sense to diversify. If your girlfriend already knows how to create websites, you might as well start now. Depending on how far along your girlfriend is with web design in college, she can move things along online. Google is definitely your friend when learning about how to make websites.

If your girlfriend is a great designer, I can see her making good money on the web. There are thousands of web site owners on the web who needs an upgrade and are willing to pay good money for it.

You don't have to know anything about web design to sell products online but it helps. You can start selling products from day 1 with hosted ecommerce stores. The hard part is getting found in the search engine :)

Affiliate marketing will probably take about as much time to figure out how to make any decent money from it.

It all depends on your goals. Product based / dropshipping ecommerce stores are really more for the long term while I see Affiliate marketing as short term and mostly small profits. You will have to spend money to make money with either.

What about actually selling any products or services on your site?

We sell physical products, similar to what you are talking about, targeting the same demographic. I can give more details in PM or skype if you like.

I recommend that you start out with adsense and affiliate sites, to learn the bulk of what you need to know. Designing the website is one of the smallest parts of the project, there is so much more to do..

Whether you sell your own product or someone else's, your biggest challenge is to get traffic to your website. You can learn about this with adsense, before making major commitments to product inventory etc.
