Monetize forums

my friend and I are looking to start a forum on the airline industry - very niche forum - any ideas on monetizing? I remember reading somewhere that this forum will some day have a membership fee or something like that...other than that what about ads? Suggestions welcome.

VBulletin has paid subscription options available. I haven't used them, so can't comment on how good they are.

http://www.visiongateportal.com/ is also fairly popular for article/forum sites which are based around membership subscriptions.

On the ad site, there are a few options. Affiliate links, CPM/CPA deals, adsense. You could even sell advertising yourself, assuming of course there are people willing to buy.
