Looking for good membership / subscription software.

My site should allow people to either make a one-time purchase of some downloadable material or create a membership with life-long access to all future updates. I could envision future membership-based projects with different requirements, maybe recurring subscription payments etc. It would be great to learn one software and re-use it.

It should run on PHP/MySQL, be hosted on my own server and open-source so that I can tweak it, and support credit card merchant accounts. I found these:
Membership software - aMember Pro $180
http://www.phppaysite.com/ $100 (Basic) / $200 (Standard) / $600 (Premium)
Membership Site Software | Membership Software | Subscription Management Software | Membership Script | Amember $200 (Dev) / $350 (Biz)
Webber - web application framework allowing PHP developers to easily create dynamic websites $130
iSubscribe v2.x :: Membership Website Automation Software $45
membership site software and content manager solution - MemberGate $4,000 - $30,000

Does anybody have experience with multiple of these? What's your opinion? Are there any good free alternatives (something like Zen Cart for shopping sites)? And what in the world makes Membergate worth over 20 times their avg. competitor?

Or are there any good review sites out there that took a neutral look at those? Couldn't find any myself. Thanks!

I have a lot of experience with Amember. Never used any of the others so I can't compare, but Amember meets your requirements, come with source code and can also be extended via the plugin system.
