Making Youtube Videos and Money?

just stumbled across a post on reddit where a youtube partner was talking about the youtube partner's program, which is now open to everyone. this quote interested me (he was asked how much money a dude with 3 million youtube views/8000 subscribers missed out on):

"If you monetized all those views in the past, you would have received about $15000 if we assume its poor-average quality videos. If you got lots of "likes" and good quality (HD) then about 20K would be a good solid number."

if his lower figure is right, that comes out to $5 in profit per 1000 youtube views. is that anywhere close to being correct? if so, i have an easy way to produce comedic videos really quickly at a rate of maybe 40 videos a day. similar videos on youtube are consistently averaging about 8000 views with very few followers. if i made 40 X 365 videos in a year thats 14,600 videos a year x 8000 views a video = 116,800,000 views a year…..116,800 x 5 = $584,000 for "easy work" that could probably be outsourced. am i being retarded? are comedic videos actually worth anything? some of the supposed big earners (ray william johnson) seem totally worthless.

also, i'm curious if the videos would continue to earn at the same rate years down the road (sort of passively), or if there is some kind of drop off in the rate for older videos?

sorry if this post is dumb and all my assumptions are out of whack.

Playing with numbers and possibilities are so exciting.. I've been there.

but as is most often the case...

all my assumptions are out of whack.

Don't let us tell you though, go do it.

The last 20,000 views I got on a higher quality tutorial YT channel.. I made $88. Assuming I got 116,800,000 views instead of that 20k, $88 would turn into $513,920. The math works out based on your above example, but getting those numbers is another story.

Expect to get an average of 2.5 USD$ if you work through the default YouTube partner program.

Also, expect a much higher chance of getting your adsense account banned if you are clicked bombed in a competitive niche.

$2.50 per 1000 views maybe? for low-value comedic videos that would be funny to some 13-40 year olds?

damn didnt know the pricing structure worked like that.

FPSRussia and similar partners are making good money.

if this is the case for comedic videos that aren't selling anything in particular, that's still not bad at all...

Well, I think it depends. A $5 CPM sounds pretty reasonable, but it largely depends on the audience. I remember I made a funny video where I'm unboxing the iPhone 5 and the CPM was very high. The video only got about 6,000 views total, but I would get a few dollars out of every 100 views. Why? Because Samsung was advertising their Galaxy phone on my video and most of my traffic came from reddit, who appear to be Apple haters and big fans of the Android platform.

You get less than $5 for 1k views.....

I just disabled it because after a few thousand views (over a few months) it hasn't earned a single penny....

Well, your views are spread across 105 videos, so ya, you won't be earning anything. You might have made a $! or two if those views had all been one video.

You can't just upload comedic videos and expect to do well. Unless its you on the videos doing jokes, then maybe. You just have to do something original so people will subscribe to you. Have to be consistent with the videos and a lot of patience/time.

i have a reason to think a lot of truly funny videos could be produced fast...and the production value could still be high. i see a lot of people doing these videos on youtube, but they're not really trying to make money off of it. most of them are doing it for fun and have around 10-100 videos. even the unknowns are averaging about 1k views per video after 3 months or so, and people with more videos (100 or so) average around 8k views per video and 500 subscribers.

if i really could produce these at a rate of 40 per day, i'd have 100 videos in under 3 days. if the videos are funny--i think they would be--i imagine it'd be pretty easy to build up a large number of subscribers really fast. i wouldn't even have to make the videos myself because of the format. but, i would probably start out making them so i could iron out the format.

i really wish i knew what the lowest of the low price per 1000 views was for someone that has say 10k+ subscribers. and, if these dudes unanimously have 500 subscribers after only 100 videos or so (with some of the more prolific video makers having many more subscribers than that), i think it would be easy to generate subscribers. i just don't know if it would be worth trying since i don't know the basement price per 1000 views. if it's five cents for someone with a large following but comedic content, it wouldn't be worth it. if it's $1.5-$2, it might be worth a try.
