Getting back in the swing of things after a hiatus, I'm looking for a hosting provider who offers shared and who will migrate my sites over to VPS / dedicated as my requirements grow over the next few months. I don't want a provider who will flip out and cut me off if I start using too much of the resources. Preferably a managed provider, one who will handle security, etc. Can anyone make a recommendation that isn't HostGator?

Edit: Just checked out rackspace. Haven't ever tried their "cloud" server packages but they look straightforward and flexible. Can anyone comment on those?

People are gonna say otherwise, but I've done this with Hostgator numerous times and I've yet to have a problem. Their support is always on the ball and I can't say I've ever had a problem with their hardware, billing, service etc. If you want a coupon code...let me know, I've got em. LOL'z.

I'm pretty sure all hosting companies will terminate your shared hosting account if you use too many resources, can't think of any exceptions.

For example, I own the hosting site in my signature and sell shared cPanel hosting at $0.98/month if you pay yearly. But at less than a buck per month, you obviously can't use the account to host something like an active forum. If you use too many resources, the hosting provider has to do something because otherwise, that provider would be shitting all over the other customers.

Some companies are better at handling things than others though.

If you use too many resources, there are companies that will simply terminate your account and that's just not professional in my opinion.

As far as I'm concerned, the solution isn't all that complicated: if one of your sites ends up receiving shitloads of traffic after an article went viral (for example), no problem at all. Congrats.

But if that happens frequently, we'll shoot you an email and recommend one of our VPS packages or even a dedicated server. If you choose one of our VPS packages or if we hook you up with a dedicated server, great. If not, then we can either terminate your shared hosting account and issue a refund (if you paid for a year of hosting and there are 6 months left, we'll issue a refund for those 6 months) or let you keep the account if you host the site that's using too many resources somewhere else. So if you have other sites, you can keep 'em as long as you host the problematic one somewhere else.

We won't just terminate your account in a "gtfo, you should have read the TOS" manner but on the other hand, you obviously can't use your $0.98 per month shared hosting account for huge sites.

+1 for hostgator. I host with 4 different companies and every domain has pingdom check.
From all 4 HG is big winner.
Stats for last month: 99.94% uptime, 480 ms everage response time. The only reason i am using other hosting companies is to illuminate possible footprints for same niche sites.

Thanks for the tips guys. I should probably just start off with a VPS as it makes more sense just to eat the fifty bucks or whatever it is during the initial month and not have to deal with crap performance. Anyone here use KnownHost or know how they compare to HG when it comes to managed VPS?

been using a hg account for years hosting like 20 addon domains average bandwidth used per day is 50gb which if you used amazon aws would be like $150 per month but hg is only $5/mo

Knownhost is good, I have 2 vps and 2 dedi's with them and the support is pretty damn good. One nice thing is you can start small and move up to larger plans as you need to with very little problems so you are not wasting money at the beginning.

I've had issues with hostgator, which isn't surprising because they admit on their blog that they oversell like crazy. So does everyone else, though. Their prices and support are generally good.

I use knownhost and am happy.

Regarding migration, almost every company will do a cpanel->cpanel for free, especially if paying them more or coming from a competitor.

hostwinds . Those guys got awesome support . And last month they had a problem with downtime (it became 99 from 99.9) and they offered a free month . Support tickets gets answered in under 2 mins . Its like they never sleep . PM me if you need codesor get it online .

Been using a hostgator reseller account for about 5-6 months now. According to pingdom zero downtime and a consistant ~400ms ping.

Thanks guys, I can't bother with the "like" bullshit but I appreciate the input from eveyrone. I'm going to give KnownHost's managed VPS packages a whirl.

HostGator has always been good for me. And if you want to upgrade to a VPS later on down the road they will transfer everything over to your new VPS for free.
