I operate a Parent Advice site and am looking for a design from someone who can do it. I don't really know how much a website will cost and just want to know how much it would cost to make a cool website that will rival such sites like Parenting.com and others. Any ideas?

It's not just about the design it's also about the funtionality. If your running on a popular platform like WordPress then you can get a decent pre-made theme for a couple hundred, a custom theme for a thousand and up depending on how many revisions you need to get the finished product. Where it gets really expensive is the script programming which is how you add actual functionalities, but it is not cheap. Unless you can find plugins to do what you want.

I agree with nickCR, functionality plays a vital role in estimating cost for the website. I am not sure how much does it cost for making a replica or probably a better website then parenting.com, but there are few sources like Elance or Odesk from where you can get an idea. Launch your project with the descriptions of features that you like to have within your website and you will get the fair idea.

I know a designer who is awesome and he charges about 2k for a PSD, add at most $500 more for someone else to develop it and you can get a great looking site. lower end you can get a decent theme for $40 or you can half ass it and have someone in the phillipines design you something for $1k that you will be kind of happy with. The point is you can essentially get a website that agencies charge clients $30k for for $2,500 tops just as long as you do your due diligence.
