My old iphone 3 got stolen a couple of weeks ago and I need to get something to replace it.

I don't really wanna get a new iphone/galaxy because I am travelling at the moment and nothing says "hold me up with a knife and gut me" quite like a gringo holding a $1,000 phone.

Some things to consider: It needs to ship to Argentina or Australia and be unlocked. I mainly want to use it for making calls/text messages and listening to music. I'll also be using a couple of apps and doing some light web browsing.

Something with good battery life (in terms of listening to music) would be a plus. Thoughts/options?

in b4 peasant. Yes I am a cheap fuck, that's why I am asking for a cheap phone asshole.

SE Xperia Ray, about $250, looks nice, pretty small and light, awesome headphones, just as with pretty much all SE's, good battery life + you can get extra batteries for ~$10-20

Look at the Sony Xperia line in an International version. Find a size that you are comfortable and then match up the specs to your liking. The Walkman apps and features are superb.

Cheap shitty Alcatel for calls and texts, and a tablet for internet when no one's looking? I think anything that can access the internet is probably gonna attract unwanted attention tbh. Maybe get one of those cheap £10 chinese ipod shuffle fakes off of ebay for music?

I've got my laptop for doing internet browsing. It's just nice to have the option to use the internet if you're looking for directions/food reviews. Most of the time it's a total non issue having money here but in certain situations it's not a great idea.

Most people here have phones that have internet connection, but iPhones are ridiculously expensive and S3's are the same way.

Nexus 4 in AUS/Argentina is the same price as an S3 almost. ($450+)

Thanks for the other suggestions, keep 'em coming.

Look at what the locals get, that is generally the cheapest option. I'm sure there is a low grade model that is popularly used in Argentina, and it should be available anywhere. The good thing about those, is that parts, hacks and fixes are easy to come by, since everyone has them.

Remember when shipping to 3rd world country = you get rapped at customs unless you know you will not before you go there (if you have any doubt about it, the answer is yes, they will rape you)

from my experience, looking at what the locals do is a great way to really enjoy the place. Almost every city has local restaurants and tourist ones, guess which is better AND cheaper. They also have local clothing shops and tourist ones. Guess which one is better AND cheaper. They also have local tourist destinations and touristy tourist ones, again... I can keep going, but will not continue to digress.

I'm not staying in Argentina, so the fixes/hacks comment is irrelevant. I have a friend coming so getting a new phone through customs isn't an issue.

Also Argentina is probably the worst place to buy a phone, for example let's say you want an unlocked S3 - is going to cost you easily $1,000USD+. If the locals could, they certainly wouldn't be buying locally.

I'm aware that there are touristic and local places to go - but in terms of technology in Argentina everybody tries to smuggle shit into the country.

Even peasents have iphones these days srs. They prioritise it over food and education.
