Google Removing Free Directory Web Sites From Index?

Web Directory Submission Danger: Analysis of Directories Shows 20% Penalized/Banned by Google | SEOmoz

Thought I will post this before people jumped to conclusions.
Considering that the good directories are still as strong as ever.
And the douchemoz thinks this is some manual adjustment....

I think they were all penguined, nothing else..
Because, come to think of it. How do directory owners build links?

I mean they won't go out and get relevant links.. I mean the only relevant links are other directories.. lol

And those smarter paid directory owners who used link baits and such have been penalized for several years now... Remember Aviva, Alive ?

If someone has time to analyse these penalized directories, you won't be surprised if you find that those directories have nothing but profiles, comments and such as their backlink portfolio...

Anyway, that is what I thought at first glance..

Let's hear your crazy theories..

They started getting hit around the same time as blog networks which isn't surprising because most people who own directories tend to own more than one, it's not uncommon for a single person to own 50 of them because they are so easy to make money off of. What they do is setup x amount of directories and start manually adding links to sites that are already in the top 10 for competitive keywords like "payday loans" and "lose weight" and then hope that when others are doing link analysis on their competitors they'll see those links and pay the $30 or whatever required to submit to the directory since the default strategy of most people doing SEO is to get links from the same places their competition is getting links. Since they have to setup 20 - 50 of these types of blogs to make it work they probably have the same footprint/ip space as blog networks.

Yeah, I have had about a dozen for years now... None have been removed from the index... However, after these articles, I did start getting an increased amount of link removal requests... thinking to add a link removal page and start charging for it...

Hahah.. you can easily have a PHPLD mod to process an automatic removal once a fee is paid ;-) automatically

SEOMaggots are FUD mongers.

Just checked 87 dir , 64 are indexed.

Even with the the de-indexes the site these are pointing to is doing great.

Yeah, I have a little local directory and it still ranks better than a lot of the submitted websites for business names.

It hasn't been penguined, and I know what penguined is. :(

I just recently purchased a few links on some really old, high PR directories. I was able to get on some actual PR5 and PR6 pages for about $75. Those directories are still alive and well as are my links.

I'll bet all of the shitty free directories did get hammered by Penguin, but anyone using those for links these days was just asking for problems anyway, so it's only a loss to the Digital Point community.

I have a super nichey PR4 directory that still makes me a few hundred per month. It's just a wordpress site using directory press and if I actually did anything with it, I could probably make 4 figures a month.
