Link building velocity: how fast is too fast?

I'm pretty conservative for the first week till I'm indexed and I know new links beyond the first one has been found.
I usually do 5 or 10 when I'm done the site, wait till I see googlebot - then I'll do a hundred or so a day or so later.
Week after that I'll set up shit on auto pilot and just sit back.... or if I need to I'll do a big burst so the rankings improve.
(Assuming your not talking shit like directory listings where when you submit 200 you end up with them slowly being approved anyway.)
I usually only revisit a site every 3 to 6 months for more links or content once I'm done that initial burst of activity anyway - so I'm abnormal.... but it works for me.

just think about what google would see as natural for instance...
nothing for a month
month 1: 50 links
month 2: 100 links
month 3: 1000 links (could be a viral success)
then decrease from there. keeping 1000 links per month forever doesnt seem like a normal rate.

My links come from 2 main sources, blogger and my own personal wordpress farm. I might also get an automated directory submitter some time down the road, though I've always been somewhat suspicious about the quality and usefulness of mass links from them.
I tried an experiment recently where I dropped 20 blogger links on my DB site on the first day before it was indexed within 2 - 4 days. I've also tried like doing 50 stumbles on a site on the first day and it was indexed in less than 12 hours. That's what leads me to think that 50 links in the first week isn't too fast.
