This guide is to help you build up links to your website and bring up your Alexa Ranking using as little budget possible.

Directory Submission
You can always submit your site to this huge directory of free directories for free:
http://web-directories.ws/General/Free/

Forum Posting
You can always become a frequent poster on big forums (usually threads are quickly indexed by Google and the links in your signature will be on the same page)!

Here is a list of big forums which are indexed by Google and are extremely popular at the moment:Please note that I am NOT saying that you should spam these forums. I am telling you to build a name for yourself and at the same time earn a few links so others know you and visit the sites in your link, which brings me to the next topic..

Organic Link Building
If you have good/unique site which will definitely get people talking like this site:
GWEI - Google Will Eat Itself

You will definitely get people talking if you can find an idea which is so unique and original (and a decent domain name to go with it).

You can also use Press Releases to get the word out to start the organic linking chain. A good free Press Release is:
http://www.i-newswire.com/

There are a few other like:
http://www.prweb.com/

Blogosphere World
The Blogosphere is basically all the big player blogs out there which will start a chain reaction, kind of like a line of dominos.

A few examples of big blogs which will result in even more blogs blogging your site are:
  1. Search Engine Journal
  2. Shoemoney
  3. Google Blogoscoped
  4. and a few more at Technorati
Digg/Shout Effect
Usually simply submitting your story/unique website to Digg or Shoutwire and if people like it, they'll Digg or Shout it.

You can get a few Diggs/Shouts by having an attractive title which forces the user to click on it. However, sometimes you need to get the word out.

This can simply be done by adding the links to your signature in forums or posting it in a blog and asking others to Digg/Shout.

Here is an example of an article which was successful on ShoutWire and made it to the frontpage of ShoutWire and TorrentSpy (an affiliate torrent site):

Alexa Ranking
To rank in Alexa is pretty simple. All you have to do is install the Alexa Toolbar on IE (they don't have one for FireFox yet) and make the page you want to have a high ranking your homepage and start using IE as your primary browser whenever you want to visit that page!

You can usually get in the top 100,000 rankings by simply doing this! (I got into the 55,000 since I'm on the net a lot)! Text Link Ads does base a portion of your sales on your Alexa Rank (getting approved needs a decent 750,000+ Alexa Rank as well!

Co-Op Advertising Networks
Basically when you display ads on some of your sites, you earn credits and your ads are displayed on other sites in the network. Here are the top 3 Co-Op Advertising Networks at the moment:
  1. DigitalPoint Co-Op
  2. Link-Vault
  3. Receive Links (If you make post here you get 500 links free with an incentive to earn more)
Paid Links
Currently Link-Vault and Receive Links allows you to buy credits to display your ads on more sites after you register.

In addition to those, you can register on Text Link Ads and get HTML Links on other websites automatically! If you buy $125 in ads, just use the code STARTER KIT and get $100 off!

If you found this guide to be useful, please say so!

thanks for the guide.
I didnt know co-op networks exist.
Co-Op is a great service, however, there might be a penalty on the sites that use it. That's why you should only put it on sites that you don't care much about...

Nice job on this guide as well!

How useful are Link Vault and Receive Links? I'm starting to go out and make smaller sites that won't be any major source of income, wondering if I should try them. They give permanent links right?

You see DigitalPoint Co-Op was started out just for plain old advertising by Shawn, but since the links were visible in HTML, people found out it could be used for SEO. He isn't doing it for the money like Link Vault and Receive Links, but DP Co-Op lets the publisher choose whether to display Dynamic (changing) or Static (same links for a while) Links.

However Link Vault and Receive Links offer ONLY static links, which is kind of what I like. I don't want it to be too obvious that I'm displaying Co-Op Advertisements...

So basically you're right..:)
