There is honest debate among scientists about the health effects of marijuana, but we believe that the evidence is overwhelming that addiction and dependence are relatively minor problems, especially compared with alcohol and tobacco. Moderate use of marijuana does not appear to pose a risk for otherwise healthy adults. Claims that marijuana is a gateway to more dangerous drugs are as fanciful as the “Reefer Madness” images of murder, rape and suicide.

I find this article content fascinating and highly original. I would subscribe to their newsletter.

^^^I'm just being a snarky internet asshole, in case that wasn't clear.

The article is recycled junk but the comments are funny at least

Just because tobacco and alcohol are legal and *may* have just as many or more detrimental health effects as marijuana should not be a reason to legalize marijuana. That's like saying that even though lying and adultery are legal and harmful to society, that means stealing shouldn't be illegal either, since shoplifting a candy bar is arguably less harmful than cheating on one's spouse.

"We reached that conclusion after a great deal of discussion among the members of The Times’s Editorial Board... In coming days, we will publish articles by members of the Editorial Board and supplementary material that will examine these questions. "

Self-aggrandizers gonna self-aggrandize.

Fuck the government.

This shit's like watching two authoritarian parents debate whether or not they should allow their 16 y/o daughter to finally get her ears pierced.

Fucking pathetic.

Recycled as in you've seen this declaration in another major newspaper? I get that it's an oped piece but I'd never seen the message in the mainstream before...

I think he meant recycled as in worn out arguments.

Weed is legal in 2 states, and meanwhile NFL WR Josh Gordon is getting suspended for the entire season and killing my Browns for taking a few puffs.

These are weird times man.

Nah, not really.

There's a dishonest debate among statist cunts, and fake bullshit from shill journalists.

When I was in Amsterdam, I hung out with a few locals.
The general perception for weed there isn't as cool as it is in our high schools here.
I was actually very surprised to hear that they don't care for weed as much as we do in countries where it's illegal.

In prague, it's not very common to find weed off the streets because whoever wants to smoke it can simply grow it. Not much of a market for easy-to-find illegal dealers.

One school of thought is that legalizing weed to some extent in some way will actually reduce the number of kids getting hooked on to it. Because it takes away the "coolness" factor associated with it.

Are you from the US? Do you understand how many kids are getting wrecked here by drinking bathtub gin??

You're almost to understanding something... almost.

An unconscious sexual competition was also taking place between these few white males of privilege and power, their well founded sexual fear of black males using marijuana to seduce and "mate with" white women.

The early black jazz musicians of the 1920s and 1930s blended their love of marijuana with sexuality. This music broke through the color barrier, and was enjoyed by both white and black audiences. Marijuana was the driving force for jazz, and it was the fear of the mixing of these races that drove the white elite.

In the 1930s the unconscious fear was that marijuana was being used as a "date rape" drug that nonwhite males used to seduce white women, giving these "out-group" males access and an unfair evolutionary advantage to spread their genes instead of those of white males.

In addition, it was feared that marijuana would make white women want to seek out males of color and want to have sex!

Keep it illegal

Come on man, who are you kidding? The Browns weren't going to make the playoffs.
