I'll be straight with you, I do not pretend to be a hosting company. I am a single tech-savvy individual who provides coding and server administrative services (such as when I converted textsfromlastnight.com from apache to the nginx webserver). As such I also host a small handful of clients most of which who were originally coding clients. Most of the clients simply want a go-to guy they can email, IM or call to fix their site, install a script or update something on their hosting in a timely manner.

Details of the Dedicated Server I currently lease:
Intel Core2 Duo 2.5Ghz
4GB Ram (This can be upgraded to 8GB to support more people)
500GB Storage
Datacenter located in Kansas City, Missouri
Roughly 33 Free IPs at this time (two class-c range: 69.197.158.x [9 avail] and 69.197.161.x [24 avail])
OpenVz + SolusVM panel
Curently two VPS running (my personal one with load averages of 0.00 0.00 0.00, and a shared DirectAdmin VPS with load averages of 0.04 0.05 0.08)

Pingdom report of the server (99.98% uptime):
36a338a0

VPS Users can reload their Operating system via SolusVM
Curently available templates are:
- CentOS 5.5 (32 and 64bit)
- Debian 5 "Lenny" (32 and 64bit)
- Custom CentOS (5.5 x64 preconfigured for low resources with Nginx/PHP/MySQL)
- Custom Debian (5.0.4 x64 preconfigured for low resources with Nginx/PHP/MySQL/SupervisorD)
(nginx is an extremely lightweight and fast webserver and ideal for those who run control-panel less servers)

I can install other operating system templates for OpenVZ from this list: Download/template/precreated - OpenVZ Wiki

VPS Plans:

One:
384MB Rams
20GB Storage
500GB Bandwidth
2 Unique IPs
35 USD /month (+5$ for DirectAdmin)

Two:
512MB Rams
30GB Storage
1TB bandwidth
2 Unique IPs
45 USD /month (+5$ for DirectAdmin)

Shared Hosting
Placed on my primary shared DirectAdmin VPS
Server's Shared IP (Unique IP avail at 4$ more)
5GB Storage
20GB Bandwidth
Softaculous Auto Installer (like Fantastico, installs over 130 scripts for you)
Managed support (installing SSL/Certificate, etc)
Shell login by request.
Cpanel to DirectAdmin migration for 15$ (single account)
15 USD /month

I'll likely only be accepting 4 or 5 VPS clients, if I upgrade to 8GB then a few more.

This looks doable, however do you have any RAID on your server? Disk I/O is the biggest issue with VPS.

Just with VPS or server hosting in general? Also didn't think that stripping (Raid 1 to increase drive speed) would make much of a difference if the server itself wasn't hooked up to anything faster than a 10mbit line, and how none of the clients are doing video processing or other high I/O needs (of which you would just get a dedi by itself instead of a VPS).

To answer your question, RAID 1 is not setup on this box.

Disk IO is a bigger deal than PHP/MySQL CPU use?!

:P I was thinking somewhat the same thing. Course I was noticing his price such as 10$ for a 512MB VPS, and being on an Xeon, probably the best selling point was that he has RAID 10 on his machines (Mirror then Stripping). But if such an xeon has say 8GB of rams, and you filled it with 10$ 512MB accounts, thats at the least 160$ income... so I'm suspecting PhotonVPS is grossly overselling his stuff, Raid10 setup won't save you when the CPU and Memory is getting fought over on an oversold system (any of them with Cpanel/Whm would only make matters 4x worse).

If nothing else, I run a tight ship, I'm hosted on the same box, so I don't want it going down any more than the people on it. And I'm not going to lease any slots over what I'm physically capable of providing.

None of our servers are oversold, however I won't go into details about how PhotonVPS is ran. But generally speaking we have a few thousand active VPS so we're fairly knowledgeable in this area of business, just giving you a heads up that's all. You can run a few VPS and you'll know what I mean down the line.

Yeah, I know what they're doing which is what I used to do when I was helping run a VPS company. It's great if you have the quantity of servers to ... how should I phrase, "shift" accordingly.

But yeah it's clean. And I do know what he means about Disk I/O, and I agree.

Honestly though... 1GB for 11$ is oversold, unless you either get the servers for free, or don't care about making a profit.

Our plans are 512MB for $10.95 with 1GB Burstable. If your "Bursting" 24/7 your VPS will be suspended for sure.

Burstable is just as good as 1GB dedicated, and the same of what I said still applies to a 512MB plan.

So basically if someone has a VPS thru you they still have to watch their memory usage just like they were on shared hosting cuz they could get suspended for using the burst too much. And what happens when multiple people burst?

Then they go back down to guaranteed.

There's always free RAM on the node for them to temporarily burst.
Yep. Companies like you hate me, just FYI :D

But he said they get suspended if they stay in burst too long :P

There's always free RAM on the node for them to temporarily burst.

Which brings me back to my original argument, either got a free server or don't care about a profit if you can do 11$ 512/1GB while still having "free" ram (meaning ram outside of the total guaranteed of all the users), you get a special on 32GB boxes? An Xeon with over 12GB gona cost you least 200$ or so even on a discount, so even 16 clients won't cover that overhead, ergo I think you're overselling even if you claim you're not. (not counting your time, support, etc)

Also if you're targeting a bunch of folks who are likely going to want cpanel/whm, wordpress with no real regards to optimizing their usage, they shouldn't have to fear getting suspended when they hit a good month.
