Learning Languages On Your Computer

I have a what.cd membership and there are a ton of audio CDs for learning different languages. I think I have the Italian one if you want me to rapidshit it.

Can't possibly help you.

Before the internet I could:

Type and think in a coherent sentence.

Didn't think that "--" was a proper to substitute for proper punctuation.

Obviously the internet screwed all that up -- so we can say that the internet actually took my language skills away. Run man, run......................

I learnt spanish in south america 2 years ago and looked at rosetta stone as a further study tool. I thought it was unstructured and not very good for learning anything beyond basic phrases and words

Rosetta Stone is the best. The problem is you cant just do Spanish I, you really need to take Spanish I-IV to get a grasp of the language. Past that you just need to speak it regularly with a native speaker to fully understand all the nuances.

1) Get an account on OK Cupid, talk to a girl in the country in which the language you want to learn is spoken.

2) Use Rosseta stone, write each other and talk on Skype a few hours a day, with little English.

3) Go visit her.

How I became fluent in Portuguese :)

My employeer offers Rosetta Stone for us to use for free and I love it. It doesn't teach you through repitetion like most other langues courses do. It teaches you from the ground up, like how a child learns to talk, which has been proven to be most effective. When I was studying german, I went through the first two courses and then I picked up German books, Movies, and Newspapers to help round out my studies. Do that and you'll be all set.

i did one lesson in rosetta stone just to see how it was.

It's a very unique way of learning a language and I was pretty shocked at how easy it was. It obviously works because i still remember the entire lesson.

They basically do something called total emmersion. They don't speak any english. they just show you pictures and say the words that represent the picture. Then they show you a bunch of similar pictures and say teh words and you have to click on the ones that represent those words. For instance they'll say girl and show a girl. Boy and show a boy. Dog and show a dog. Then they show all three pictures and say each one and you select which ones are which till you get it right. Then it says girl eats and shows a picture of a girl eating. Boy eats. etc. By the end of the lesson you kind of get the hang of it all.

You could have become fluent in Portuguese just by going to the dirtier parts around Boston...
