I've heard a few horror stories where people didn't even know their host had issues and their site was unavailable , so I've been thinking about it from the start...

Here's a nice little site that helps you spy on your host and discover when your site is down:

It will automatically e-mail you and its basic version is free!

It's not 100% accurate, although I don't know any service that is. Several times in the span of the last 5 months I've gotten false alarms

I had just the opposite experience, when it missed a few downtimes I knew about. But it's the best one I know of and will probably notify you of all the big fish that bite your site.

You really have to have your eyes open when it comes to this, and even analyze it. It is not funny when a vital part of your business is offline, and you are losing customers.

Julez, you really need to keep an eye on your sites. I normally visit my sites at least once a day.

Thats one of the reasons I have at least an adlinks strip on everything - its a really easy way to track of whether all my sites are up, all in one place.
