hi - i want to make a site that features site screenshot's in my directory (the same way alexa does it). my question to you is this.. is this resource intensive on the server? can i get by with a shared acct? i want screenshots to be updated ... every 30 days or so.. or as often as alexa does it. do i need to go dedicated?

how many sites do you want to keep track of?

it shouldn't be resource intensive if you do it correctly

i want to get hundreds of backlinks and have a thumbnail screenshot for each web site i link to. maybe even in the low thousands.

ABCDrawHTML - free HTML render and thumbnail component for ASP and .NET
easy windows/asp/.net solution.

HTML To Image - Converts HTML Web Pages to JPEG, PNG, JPG, GIF, BMP and TIFF in batches.
another easy windows solution (with user gui)

WebSnapr - Website Thumbnails For Your Site
free service, similar to thumbshots.org and ask.com's "binocular preview"...

I know there are some linux/php solutions out there, I'll have to dig them up.

As long as you're not trying to snap/create/save each thumb realtime, the load shouldn't be much to worry about. I would just batch the process depending on how often the content/links are updated.

None the less, sounds like a fun project. Best of Luck!
