Is selling on craigslist and ebay THIS easy?

Here is what I have in mind:

On each sequential garbage day, I'll go around peoples houses and pick up the items on the curb that they throw away from their trash.

Along with the bad items, I often find good quality cds, printers, computers that still work, chairs that are in good shape, and many other things. Yet people still throw them away. God shameful America!

So here is the fun part:

I was thinking about turning around and selling these items for cash on craigslist or ebay.

Do you just post your item and give it a description, choose pricing, and select how you want to ship and wallah, your item is now available to be seen by lots of people(especially in your local area)?

No social media, social bookmarking, or website store required for Craigslist? Within hours of posting, you could have a sale in no time?

Is it really this easy for making a sale?

There's a guy named Michael Senoff on hardtofindseminars.com who has a training on Craigslist:

How I Make & Save a Fortune Buying And Selling On Craigslist & How You Can Too

I got it during a $20 promotion, but haven't listened to it yet. However, I can say that his stuff is generally worth the asking price. You can also intuit a lot of what is going to be said just by reading through the product description, so that will give you a bunch of ideas all on its own.

I think the ultimate trick you're going to need is to learn sales copy techniques that work in those mediums. I think Ebay will handle long copy, but Craigslist probably not.

But here's the kicker: you've used the word "easy."

The real thing to think about is this: it will be work (cash generation always is) ... but will it be fun?

After all, spending money is so much more fun when you've had fun making it!

Yes it is as easy donning the sacred suit of the street bum and fishing around peoples discarded things for a living.

On the other hand I know some crafty family friends who bought low and sold high after gathering a bit of capitol and learning the prices of commonly bought shit. Give it a shot, you can scale just about anything.

Who knows, maybe in a year you will have your own network of raggedy-clad superheroes bringing you old lamps and records to sell on your eBay.

Craiglist is a cesspool of cheap bastards for the most part.

Anything I've ever sold on there goes like this:
-Posting goes up, get a bunch of spammy emails, couple of legit sounding people
-People make appt to come look at item, usually a minimum of 45 minutes late
-Offer you half your asking price and get offended when you tell them to fuck off
-Agree at 80% of asking price, then they don't have enough cash on hand.
-I either take half my asking price, or tell them to fuck off again.
-Vow to never sell anything on CL again

I suppose there's money to be made. If you can put up with all the tire kickers, scammers, and bullshitters out there, you could make something of it. As said above, scaling could be difficult depending on the size of your city and how much ground you're able to cover.

Spot on...
List something for $1 and they will ask you if you'll take a dime for it. But if you have the patience to weed through all the losers CL can be a good thing. It sure beats all the eBay and Paypal fees that take away such a big chunk of your money.

Honestly, that might be a good business model if you have a pick-up truck, no income, and few skills.

No, it's not very scalable.

No, it's not how people "make money" on craigslist. It could be a very reasonable plan to get out of being homeless, or serious problems.

I have a guy that lives by me in a decent house. All he does is drive around with his truck, pick up scrap metal such as ovens, dryers, etc, all broken and free. Makes around 50-200 a day. It won't make you insanely rich but it could work.

Fucking garbage pickers... hate 'em.

Not to hate on your hood or anything MisterD, but where do you have to live to be surrounded by people like that? :offtopic:

Fucking Detroit, man...
I've had people show up to our meeting spot packing heat. They do that to
intimidate you into agreeing to a lowball price. But I be like "Come At Me, Bro!"

I'm in the Bay Area (CA), but that shit applies no matter where you live. CL is like an online garage sale with the typical weirdos and lowlifes.

I'm not too far from Oakland, there's news reports almost every week about people buying or selling something on CL, meeting up with the other party and then getting jacked at gunpoint - taken to an ATM and forced to withdraw as much money as possible.

It's a shady world out there, but I'm thinking someone might be ok selling a crusty toaster that they found in a garbage can.

OP, the only reason you should be doing anything like that is if you're short on funds and want to start buying shit for a real online business. Good hosting, Moz, Majestic, great themes, buying traffic, etc all add up, and if going around town junk collecting can help offset the cost while you're starting out, then do it.

I still hit up thrift stores, yard sales, and even places like Big Lots every once in awhile when I'm driving by. Sometimes I'll pull $500+ profit from less than $10 and half an hour of my time. It is a great feeling when you find something worth a few grand that the store/owner wants only a few bucks for.

That explains it. I live in the most hippie/musician ridden part of Montreal where people apologize for blinking at you the wrong way.

I have actually bought a bike from someone who lowered the price for me because I didn't ask for a lower price lol. Fucking Canada.:xmas-smiley-010:

Ahh... I've been to Calgary a few times, and it's true - Canadians are freakishly nice.
Be grateful you don't have to deal with the shitheads we have in the US. :)

Yeah, I was selling gift cards on CL and some dude pulled a knife on me and was like "give it up white boy".. Idk why, but I just didn't take the dude seriously at all and he ended up screaming "GIVE ME THE CARDS" and i was just acting stupid like woah calm down man, then i finally said Im not giving up these cards and the dude threatened me one more time, I said the same thing and then he ran away.

Rolf, I sold my iPhone that way, once Mexican type pf fella came to buy, late at night, trying to rob me, had to knock his lights out and run home, cause bitch was screaming for police :) Not that I sell every day, but you can sell with no problems, meet at open areas in parking lots, you will be safe, no one wants to rob you at day light with the gun in your face, that would be way too fucking stupid :)

but can it scale?

Of course it scales. In germany there are already groups, often migrant families who are doing exactly this professionally. There is no reason why they could not expand. Even pan handling scales....ask professional gypsys. There are bosses who employ a whole army of "musicians" - they can't play their instrument for shit, but it doesn't matter...

Also, not everything has to scale. If you lack cashflow to build a scalable business and you do not have more lucrative options....
