Is adding whois privacy to a previously public whois domain pointless?

Hey guys,
I don't post often in this section, but this time I have a n00b question for all you domain dudes out there. :)

So...I have a couple of domains that I purchased years ago. Back then, I registered them with my real name and address, not thinking ahead.

Well now some of those names could become very useful for me to develop some sites onto, but I want my old real contact info hidden for spying eyes.

I think I read somewhere that adding whois protection to an existing domain doesn't really work well, because people can still look up the "whois-history" of that domain and still find my old info somehow.

Is there any truth to this, or can I safely add private whois to these names now and have my name/address info hidden?

Thanks!

What about making it look like you sold it?

Move it to a different registrar and hosting (if any) or parking service (if any)?

I suppose someone could use the history to ask you if you still own it, but lie if they don't bring the force of authority behind them.

Seem plausable -- still not worth it?
