I am in the process of negotiating for a domain that has been around since 1998.

It used to be a site, but now it seems like its been parked for over a year (according to the way back machine)

The site has a bunch of back links pointing to it (including a Yahoo one) and some of them look pretty old.

If I buy the domain and put a site up on it, what are the chances I will be sandboxed? Does this domain have any value over a brand new domain (since it has been parked for so long)?

The only reason I'm interested in this domain is because I think it has built up some authority for being around for such a long time and thus would be easier to SEO... or am I wrong?

@funlol I wouldn't spend loads (read: 100's) on buying it. You can get domains like this all over the place for $10 - $60 .

Yes it will has some authority as its aged, and has a large amount of backlinks so shouldn't get hit with any kind of penalty, and will be indexed relatively quickly.

(your mileage may vary etc etc.....)

and the backlinks pointing to it look old

a problem im seeing is that the domain changed hands in 2006...could this hurt?

did you analyze the anchor text of the domains pointing to the domain? I mean one would think if you have a load of great phrases pointing towards it, it would hold advantages for those keywords. Dunno what tool you use - may want to check out link diagnosis or analyze backlinks . also you can sometimes use the wayback machine to see how old the links are
