In the newbie guide, it states to buy a URL off namecheap.com.



All he's saying is that if you don't have any website to submit to networks then you can submit your tracking domain. If you're doing any kind of marketing you NEED to set up self-hosted tracking. The domain doesn't have to be used just for this purpose. I have mine set up on a sub-domain of my company site.

If you have another website you can submit then just do that.

ahh! i get it now. so the tracking domain is basically useless though? i can track down my sales somehow can't i?

for self hosted tracking i'll then have to buy a domain right?


one more question, why do i still need to set up for it? no ones gonna visit my site to see my ads that i'm trying to network from.

Buy a domain for tracking purposes, it is simply a router for the ad click to eventually find it's way to your offer page.

Think of it this way. If somebody sends you a physical letter, it will make a stop off at a post office to determine how it will get to you. You don't really care about that post office all you care about is your letter, but somebody had to buy the land to put that facility there so that the infrastructure would be in place to get you your letter.

Like Justo said, the tracking domain is where all your data comes together. It's like this: You buy a domain (any will do) you install your tracking software and use it to track all your campaign data. This domain is not intended for anyone to see but you. It's simply there because if you're using a self-hosted tracker you need somewhere to put it. If I were to go to your tracking domain I'd just see a login screen. You, however, would go to your tracking domain, log in, and be able to look at all the stats for your campaigns. The reason Nickycakes suggested you use your tracking domain when submitting to networks is because some people don't have any websites to submit when applying. So your tracking domain is FAR from useless, it's like your home-base.

Okay. I'm going to reread the section when I get home but I thought affilate marketing was hosting an ad on your site. Or what I'm doing right now, advertising a product for someone.
 
Affiliate marketing can mean lots of different things. MLMers and Mary Kay chicks call themselves affiliate marketers too

Ohh, right. I want to start a website when I'm stable enough. I'm gonna get there by advertising for people. probably when I have $500 I'll start a website? Or should I get more money until I start a website?

As a general rule you can only start a website IF AND ONLY IF you have $500. But you can't have more $800. It only works in that range.
 
I'm a bit confused here... you come in starting a thread asking for basic knowledge on what a tracker is, and now your sig is directing people to visit your "world-class backlink service"? What is that about? I'm happy to help, but If you're in here starting retarded noobie threads to promote your backlink service then you can GTFO.
