I am now ranked on the 1st page for "hookah reviews" but the #1 links is a blog that hasn't been used in over a year, but they have a ton of backlinks. What I can do to outrank them?

i think the answer is in your post... get a ton of backlinks. i believe there's an online service that let's you see your competitor's backlinks.
Just saw the blog with latest post dated 10/2009 at #1, it's hard to beat the keyword in a .com domain name, backlinkwatch only reports about 8 links, 6 from the same site, looks like a small enough niche to easily dominate. The big boys would do it by simply buying the other domain that seems to be getting no love from the owner. It would have been best to make an offer a month ago when the domain was up for renewel.
buy a domain with hookah reviews in the name... such as hookreviewspro etc etc etc..
then as your blog title put hookah reviews and do major backlink blasts for that keyword only...
eventually you will be #1

Get links from ALL the places you can and use the anchor text of the keyword your trying to target in them. Vary it up some to through Google off a bit.
