If a domain is about to expire, what is the best company to go with to try and grab it?

Snapnames is pretty good. I think it's personal preference to be honest because there are several companies that have equally good services.

There are various drop catching services like Snapnames.com and Pool.com
Snapnames has an agreement with some registrars (look at the preferred partners page); so check the whois info for the domain you'd like to buy and look at the registrar: if it's one of the Snapname's preferred partners, than this service is the best choice.
