So now that it is official (post on seo round table today said chrome will have warning in search results for sites without https) that we need to do this to all our websites has anyone got experience how it effects rankings?

I am just wondering whether I should wait a few days till after Xmas in case rankings may go down a bit while the redirects take place.

Thanks

It is still in the proposal stage. So until something is actually agreed on, and then executed, you have nothing to worry about.

"Official"?

Apologies for scaremongering, I didn't read the article.

Anyway I'll do it after Xmas, it sounds quite cheap and easy actually so is probably worth it anyway for the small SEO boost.

You have got too much time on your hands, but I will look into the fact that some people are loosing traffic when switching to https (thanks for the heads up), maybe there are some best practices to follow.

The only site I have seen switch got lower traffic and much worse on deep pages.

Just sayin....

People can't even configure www and non-www to point to the same server most of the time. So it's no surprise to me that some websites that switch to HTTPS have a drop in traffic.

Poorly configured HTTPS sites either fail to load, trigger the catastrophic "Are you sure you want to continue?" browser prompt for their visitors, or fail to redirect HTTP->HTTPS so googlebot doesn't even know they made the effort. :1orglaugh:

Way too much fixation around HTTPS for SEO. Aaron Wall just wants to sell another edition of SEOBook appended with a chapter about how important it is.
