Hey all,
I have an opportunity to purchase a niche website.

The site is very popular in this one particular niche, traffic keeps growing exponentially, and has a very active user/fan base. People talk about this site on niche forums etc. So far the site hasn't done any real serious form of monetization yet though....i.e. product creation/releases. The only income is coming from occasional affiliate posts and 1 advertiser. I don't think the guy has ever really tried to seriously monetize. . It is profitable though...just not full time profitable.

Additionally, the site ranks on the first page for most of the target money terms in this niche. For a few of them the site is even ranked 1 or 2. Approx. 2000 mailing list subscribers and growing.

If I bought the site the goal would be to build this site and popularity etc. and eventually create/release products to cash in on the sites popularity.

My question is this....the site has the word "free" in the domain name. Do you see this as a serious hindrance to having this site make any serious money?

I mean with the fanbase this site has I just see so many upsell possibilities but I just don't know if "free" would cause problems.

Anybody, have any experience with this issue? Thanks.

Don't see any problem upselling on the basic free stuff, or just offering different complimentary products for sale off the bat.

What will prevent you from trying out a few different stuff to see the success?

Well,
1. there's the initial buying fee that I would pay.

2. The time I would put into monetizing it.

I think the time would hurt me more than the money though a loss of both could be a bit painful.
