Hello WF,
I am new to the forum, upon reading around the forums for a while, I realised there are quite a few people who repeatedly ask for advice on what configuration should the 'servers they buy' have..
Well, Here's a quick guide to what you need to host what..and how much approximately does it cost:
[BUDGET: upto $20]
If you're on a budget and looking to host a small website with a little traffic, you best bet would be a shared hosting environment
...there are various providers who'd provide cheap virtual hosting:
HOSTGATOR.COM
GLOBAT.COM
YPHOST.COM (unmetered datatransfer)
DREAMHOST.COM
INFINITETECH.IN (Offshore)
[BUDGET: upto $70]
If you are looking to host a few dynamic websites with a few thousand monthly uniques, your best bet would be a VPS...
256-512MB RAM and a few GBs webspace.
[BUDGET: upto $200]
If you're a webhost or are looking to host some high traffic dynamic websites, dual core servers would be your best bet..
Core2Duos [4500s] would be available in this price range
About 1-2 GB of RAM would be enough to handle the load...
[BUDGET: $500]
If you own an active forum getting a few thousand daily uniques, a dual processor and multi core server would be your best bet..
Intel Xeon 5355s are the hottest servers in the market at the moment...
2 CPUs with 4 Cores per CPU...imagine the POWER!
such a processor filled with 8 GB RAM and SCSI disks would run as fast as a race horse!
For All NewBie members:
Average space static business websites use up: 700Kb
Average datatransfer static business websites use up: 500MB-1GB
1 GB of webspace is WAY MORE than what you think...
If you're getting a server with 80 GB HDD, DO NOT THINK IT IS TOO LOW...because trust me, you have no idea how big 80GB is!
If you're ever looking to purchase a server/VPS, pop me a PM and I'll definitely help you out..
If I can't meet your requirements...I'll guide you in the direction of a provider who can:rasta:
+REPs will be appreciated:bowdown:
