How to better project my domain?

Hey guys, recently someone got access to my domain and transferred it to their domain company. I was wondering how they did this?

Because i don't actually own the domain, my friend does. He lets me use the CPanel / dreamhost account details but they are limited to certain actions such as transferring the domain.

Still, somehow the person managed to transfer ownership of the domain, i was wondering how? and how should i better protect it in the future.

I owned for example domain.com
he owned domain.net
i registered it before him.

Probably someone hacked into the account and transferred it. Did you contact your domain registrar?

Since you don't own the domain and your friend does, shouldn't you be checking with him first about this rather than asking people who don't really know what's going on?
