How much to pay for good design?

I think you could probably get a very good design with a contest on SP.. Better yet once WF grows a bit, maybe you could have a contest here.

You'd probably pay a lot less than going with an established designer/company too.

Probably. They design for just about anything over there. No doubt they will design for wordpress too. At the very elast you will have the basics then can get it converted into a wordpress theme

Wouldnt it vary by site too? I can see how a complicated design would run you up but something simple should be easy to get good quality for a good price.

That article is quite spot on. We generally charge the same however if we find that individuals are prepared to pay for just a design (PS Comps etc) and then take it elsewhere to get coded (probly by our Indian friends at GAF or RAC).

This means we only throw a figure of about 600-1000USD at the client. Not sure how many others do this but usualy most people tend to offer different deliverables within their clients budget.

Anyone know if Wordpress themes do well in contests there?
sure, but don't ever let a designer code your design, unless he has a track record of properly coded templates. Always ask for an uncoded template and let a coder do the coding, or you'll end up with a designer that either has a go himself, or tries to outsource to a cheap beginner who doesn't know what he's doing. Seen it happen a lot.

I recently read this:

http://www.pearsonified.com/2006/06/how_much_should_a_design_cost.php

And I thought it raised a pretty good question. Those of you who outsource design, how much do you pay?

I'm a big believer that you get what you pay for in this area, so cheap gets you cheap.

The pricing is in line with some of the quotes I have recieved lately - $2k-5K depending on the level of detail (that is for an orginal Wordpress Theme and Tweaking / Custom Plug-ins, etc..) -

The contest idea is great - Have been on both ends of that stick before - I don't like making people feel like they are lab rat on speed hitting a feeder bar to make a living - but it saves money at the same time..for the buyer and costs the designer a lot of time they will not be paid for..

People here (Malaysia) have a real thin budget for web design (as well as other web services). They normally pay less than RM1000 (around USD$274) for a full site design; while expecting you to do everything (supporting, etc...).
