I have a client interested in advertising on my domain...there's a few scenarios:

1) header banner
2) sidebar banner
3) contextual link w/paragraph
4) footer link

I've been charging a flat rate for my current text-link advertisers, and will probably do the same to start for this client. CTR is not good (less than 1/2%), but page views are pretty high (over 70k/day).

Try to figure out what a good CPM would be for your site's subject matter, and charge that. Possibly charge a premium for the more prominent ad positions (header banner, contextual link).

Yep, cost per thousand.

I'm talking out of my ass here, but I'm guessing that web developers and SEO experts would be a desirable demographic which should earn you a solid CPM. But hopefully someone that knows more than I will come along and help you out.

How do you predict the CTR? Obviously the CTR will depend on both the placement and the ad itself, + the various types of pages your site has. (articles/listings/archive pages/forums etc)

Agreed - I sell ad inventory for a couple of sites on a CPM. I started low and gradually increased it until I found a sweet spot where I was charging a rate I liked and still selling a good portion of my space.

If you don't have an ad server yet, I've been happy with phpAdsNew - it's free and enables you to provide a login for stats to your ad buyers.

By the way - phpAdsNew is a good tool for running affiliate ads, too. It enables you to test multiple ads in the same spots to see which perform best.

thanks...I'll look into it.

I am a little skeptical about CTR, since it's so low. less than .05%. Is that typical? I just have a few banners I'm tracking at this point. I'm concerned the client may pull out after a month.
