I haven't read anything that talks directly about separating your domains on to different IP's but I've heard people mention it.

What kind of techniques are used for separating domains and why? I understand the general principal but am not sure if there is more to it.

Thanks.

Some believe that separating out IP's allows you to interlink sites more easily without being penalized by the SE's such as Google. IMO, it's always a good idea to avoid putting all your eggs in one basket, so you should always have multiple domain registrars, multiple webhosts (with mulitple IPs), multiple sources of monetization, etc.

You should search, we just talked about this about a month ago.

It is thought that links from domains on the same C Block are not as valuable as other links, but you don't necessarily need to have multiple registrars or hosts to "separate" your sites, since some of them do it on their own.

To check it for yourself, google "c block ip checker". Here are some quick links:

Find IP address - Check IP Address - Test Class C IP Address
Class C Checker :: Webmaster Toolkit

I'm hosting a number of domains at Dreamhost and none of them are hosted on the same Class C ip range.

When IPv6 hits mainstream, oh buddy. The spam shall floodeth. Web hosts will be whoring out cheap IPv6 IPs
