How does the whole 'reputation' system work?

Just curious, what do the symbols mean when you get rep.

I got a red one from a troll, orange ones and some bluish grey ones.

Also - before I even got any my bar was full...whats that about?

Orange/blue ones are +reps. The more rep someone has, the more pull they have, so the more rep they can give. Negative rep (red) usually come if you're a douche or the person giving it to you is a douche.

it says i have "You currently have -30557141 reputation point(s)". I dunno why. someone gave me 1 neg rep but i got -3million in rep points?

Thats what prompted me to ask the Q.

I thought I might have 10 or 15 rep points or something - but then I looked at it and it says:

"You have 1420081210 Reputation point(s)."

I'll take it though!
 
I can spot you 30 million rep points to bring you back up airball, I have 1.4 billion burning a hole in my pocket.

Maybe I'll also get some investment chocolate with the rest.
 
I am prolly on page 20000 or so. What happens with this rep? If it is of any importance now? how do I get rid of rep that was left by a 10 post wonder for no reason?
