How do you make your own hosting at home?

I searched on google but couldn't find anything good. If anything can help me establish my own hosting server at home then I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

put linux on it
install apache
open ports

Thanks. Does the computer have to be top of the line or can it be crap with a huge hard drive and good internets?

Depends on what you want to run. But chances are if your willing to host it yourself it wont need anything top of the line.

I run a small Ventrillo server on Pentium 3 Linux, 8 years old machine works great.

What provider are you referring to because I currently have "unlimited" hosting with hostgator and I'm more than certain that my hosting is shit. My webpages load slow as fuck and I'm just sick of paying for it every month.
