I've been in an out of severe depression for almost a year, as a result I've gotten "lazy" (I'm just really depressed and don't give a shit about working). The depression has nothing to do with hating AM, it's some personal shit I haven't been able to work through. I have trouble focusing on anything for more than 5 minutes before my mind wanders. I feel I've tried everything to get out of my funk but haven't been successful.

I know I've read some threads on here about depression, how do you guys work through it? I wish I could just lose myself in work and use it as an escape to get my mind off life for just a few hours a day.

Are you sure you are diagnosing this right? Sorry to be frank but it sounds like your lazy and because of that you're now depressed? Cause and effect is when you look at the effect of something rather than the cause, which is 99% of the time the individual. You got to this point, you know you can climb out of it. First thing you do is lift bro, go to the gym. Once you're not lazy anymore you've at least solved half of what you keep telling yourself.

I find meditation really helps when I'm down. I'm very introspective, when there's a problem it tends to stick to my mind; meditation will give you that peace and calm you need, and it'll help you focus on your work. Plenty of threads on it here, a lot of articles you can find through Google as well- give it a shot.

^ That

Get some kind of exercise in your daily routine.

Drugs and hookers.
Or just drop whatever you are doing now and do whatever you are interested in.

This works too, not the healthiest choice but It works and here is why.

What you need to do is anchor a more pleasurable state that knocks out the depression state you're in. You can do this by finding something you find pleasing or that you enjoy.

Let's use this gif for example:

Every time I see this gif, I fucking laugh my ass off...

Laughing is one helluva drug...

So...now that I know this thing makes me fucking laugh hard I can use it to my advantage when I feel a sad feel coming on...

To sum things up;

1. Feel sad feel coming
2. open funny gif, laugh my fucking ass off for 5 minutes
3. ???
4. Go lift

The reason why you're feeling tired all the time is because you're always thinking and ruminating about various things and this is soaking up all your energy. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you probably wake up feeling tired too right? That's because, according to one book that I read, depressed people spend more time in REM sleep than non-depressed people and REM sleep uses up a great deal of your energy, which has you waking up feeling tired.

What is very effective for me is INTENSE exercise. Go to the gym, get on the treadmill, and run for as long as you can or until you're sweating profusely. Then go lift weights. Do this every day.

Something else you can is talk to people and socialize. Ask people questions or ask them how they're doing and start a conversation. Why? Because this helps you bring you out from your shell. Depression makes you more selfish and gives you this inward focus where you become somewhat blind to the outside world. By talking to people and socializing, you will see that there is a world outside of yourself, which then allows you to worry/ruminate less.

Here is a great book that I recommend you read - [ame="http://www.amazon.com/How-Lift-Depression-fast-Approach/dp/1899398414/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366946637&sr=8-1&keywords=how+to+lift+depression+fast"]How to Lift Depression.: ..fast (Human Givens Approach): Joe Griffin, Ivan Tyrrell: 9781899398416: Amazon.com: Books[/ame]

Have had troubles in the past with procrastination where I would abort work and end up wasting hours of time on forums, news sites, social networks etc. This may have been caused by too much Caffeine or not enough focus, fuck knows. Watched The Social Network again recently and saw the FB guys "Wired In". I now plug in some earphones and throw some Spotify playlists on and can now work hours straight through. Have the odd break and coffee etc, but overall getting tons more work done daily and you get motivated once you start to see some progress.

Anti-depressants will do nothing for you. You could try running 4 miles every day; that causes your brain to naturally produce uppers. It's probably one of the more natural ways to boost your mood.

Aside from that, you should really think about the real cause of your depression. I'm of the belief that depression is mostly caused by our circumstances. This can then cause us to take chemicals, which briefly make us feel good, but then amplifies that same depression, as we crash even harder back to where we were before. SSRI's do nothing but remove all emotion, in effect removing our humanity. Most people here are busy burning their pleasure pathways in their brains as they race along in their mad dash to make monies or be successful. That's the losers shortcut.

What you have to realize is that there is a huge, fundamental, systemic reason behind your depression that you first have to realize. Then you have to design a life solution to it, which you will have to work towards. Some of the reasons people become depressed is because they have no money, no girlfriend, no friends, no prospects, no achievements, no talents, no beauty, etc...

Once you really become introspective and follow your depressed thoughts back to their original source, you can begin designing a solution in your life that you can begin striving towards. It will probably take you several years before your solution begins to actually manifest itself, but at that point you have resolve and purpose and the journey itself has begun to lift your spirits about your current situation.

That's one man's opinion on the matter. Think of it what you will.

it's some personal shit I haven't been able to work through.

You need to work through that personal shit. It's more important. Then come back to work.

Remember that things mostly get better.
Try to not catastrophize.
Be rational.
