How do you define a profitable keyphrase?

Hey all. On The Challenge they recommend you only work with keywords/phrases that have at least 80 clicks per day for the number 1 ranked site, and >30,000 competing pages.

Niche Blueprint recommends only working with keywords that have at least 500 searches/day and under 150,000 competing pages.

The reason I ask is that I recently started work on a keyphrase but on further analysis I realised that even if/when I rank at number 1 (which wouldn't be tooooo hard), the level of traffic I would receive would still be too small to properly monetize.

So, do you guys have general rules you follow when selecting which keywords to target?

Thanks everyone for helping a newbie!

Hmm from what I remember so they quite chicken when it comes to choosing kw.

go bigger then they think in terms of competition they have set the bar quite low.

First, the number of competition doesn't mean shit.. but regarding your question,

If I had a choice of entering a keyword with 100 clicks/day at #1 with 30,000 comp and 500 clicks/day at #1 with 150,000 comp I'd go for the 100 clicks one because I know I'd get #1, then go for the other one later if I can't find a keyword to get into lol
