How do Widgets make $$$?

Just wondering how all of these companies selling MySpace etc Widgets are making $$$?

The widgets are usually free - so do they make money only from advertising on their home page?

I'm not talking about revenue sharing widgets that take a cut of the commisions earned via affiliate programs, etc.

For that myspace shit they just add links to their site to the code and hope to get a shitload of visitors from profiles and eventually from getting into serps and will probably have adsense for income, maybe aff offers if the traffic is targeted enough which it wont be from myspace.

i still find it hard to believe these places keep getting so much investment capital from VCs and angels - i guess there are just so many people out there using these stupid things...
