How can I get my crashed website back up and running?

If my site crashes due to too much traffic, is there anything I can do from the cPanel to get it back up and running (I have a VPS) or does it have to be done by the hosting company?

I just got upvoted to the the number 1 spot for a sub reddit and my site has crashed and I want it back up and running again.

Get your site on a dedicated server with more bandwidth and you won't have this problem. Being on a shared plan and having your site get hammered with traffic is a disaster. But to answer your question I don't think you're going to be able to fix it via cpanel. Don't piss away this good traffic by going cheap on your server. Take advantage of it while you can.

Thanks for the heads up. I didn't think a VPS was going to be an issue but apparently it is.

I've contacted to hosting company and despite the fact they advertise 24/7 US based customer service, no-one was there to talk and no-one has returned my call. It might be time to change.

Any recommendations for a good dedicated server?

Not if it's set up correctly. Also, a dedicated can just as easily get 'hammered with traffic'. OP hasn't even expressed if that is the cause yet. :p

singlehop is what I use. It's very reasonable price, and they really do work 24/7. I set it up so when my website goes down for any reason, it opens a ticket with them and they end up fixing it very quickly.

One thing I do have to say about them is, make sure you set up backups with them and triple check the configuration with them. When my server got hacked, the backups they told me were being done weren't. Eventually they managed to recover everything from my server and migrate it on a new one.

They are very professional in my opinion.

Fuck. I did a gentle reset on someone's advice and now the server isn't responding at all. I can't access the cPanel, and the site just isn't returning any results at all.

Support STILL won't fucking answer tickets or phone calls.

Just a heads up, stay the fuck away from hostwinds. Fucking lying pack of cunts.

I got Knownhost and they respond to my support ticket in 20 minutes tops anytime in the day..

That's far better than the 6 1/2 hours it took Hostwinds. I'll do some scouting around and see what's available.

I know the support at hostgator is top notch so I'm inclined to go with them but I'll see how it goes.

You didn't go down because you're on a VPS.

You went down because you probably have zero caching.

A new host will do nothing for you if you don't fix your system. If you're on something like Wordpress, then you're just a plugin away from a website that handle thousands of users where it once choked on 20.

If you still can't get into your site try putting up a temporary 503 while you install a caching plugin (I assume you're using wordpress)

Close your website temporarily with Apache htaccess see 1) Simple, almost-best method

Then install a wordpress caching plugin (you should be able to still access the site as you excluded your ip).

Then remove the 503.

Feel free to PM me if you get stuck.

Consider the following before moving to a dedi.

1. Use a cdn for ALL your static content, javascript, images, css. ( I use Amazon s3 + cloudfront ).

2. Make sure your site is optimized. I mean why the fuck would you run WordPress if you just want a single page html page... Just saying...

3. Optimize the fuck out of your page... SpeedTest... if it's just html you should be able to hit 99 / 100. I was capable of such a result from CloudFlare at a higher level.

4. CloudFlare is pretty good at what they do and if you have lots of traffic it's good practice to run them.

Thanks for all the info guys. There's a lot in here and I'll take a little while to churn through it.

I've got a CDN and everything is cached as well so I don't think it's that. In saying that, I know so little about website optimisation that it well could be.

Have any of you guys tried websynthesis.com

I've got a mate who's using them and he's got the same amount of traffic that hit my site in teh spike. He says he's got no issues with it.

It's not a dedicated server (it's a VPS), but he loves it. Have any of you guys tried it?

I tried hosting with them for a v.small blog, had a very small surge in traffic, like ~1000 UV's in 1 day, and they suspended the account and held the ftp access to ransom.

I have also have an aff account with them, for a couple years... 95% of the signups get cancelled/terminated.

The guy who runs it, Peter I think, has a very short temper and comes across like a kid, leaves a lot to be desired thats for sure.
