Am I doing this wrong? I swear this worked differently when I was with Ipage.

Anyway, I switched to a hostgator shared hosting plan because they have better service.

I have 1 main domain. I wanted to add a second domain that's hosted elsewhere. I pointed the nameservers, and then I did domain addons, and it seems like it technically created it as a subdomain. Is this my only option with a shared hostgator account??

So if my origional domain was Domain1.com, and I just set up Domain2.com, it can now be access by going to domain2.domain1.com, like a sub domain.

I have 2 domains, but when I go into file manager, there are 3 options for "document root" to view:

Domain1.com
Domain2.com
Domain2.domain1.com

I just want to make sure I'm not messing things up before installing WP, building my second site, etc.

Also, when I do shit like a full backup, is it going to backup both sites now? Seems like it. I only have 1 cpanel account still.

Hostgator has a Baby plan and a Hatchling plan as their two smallest. IIRC you need the Baby plan to connect multiple domains.

I have the baby plan. I just wanted to make sure I was setting up my databases/files the right way. i think it's right, i'll install WP and go for it.

The thing is, that cPanel creates a subdomain for every "Addon domain" you create.
You can't avoid this, it's how cPanel works.

Just make sure that you put your "Document root folder" outside "/public_html".
It's more organized and secure.
