I saw that on CNN. Apparently there was a bus full of kids on the bridge when it collapsed. Luckily, it didn't go in the water. Another car caught fire and exploded.

OMFG. That's insane. I was working or shopping all day and I totally missed this... What a horrifying thing that must have been for the people as they slid into the river. Wow.

Scary, I just went by there yesterday and I saw all the workmen on it doing maintenance to the surface...

That's tragic.

We have a Mississippi river bridge here in New Orleans that was built in 1935! I don't think I'll be crossing it any time soon.

lol, supposedly that bridge in Minneapolis was just inspected/repaired in 2002 too.

I take that bridge every single day, this is royally fucked

Damn. Glad your alright!

I can commiserate with that feeling as I go to Virginia Tech and walked by Norris hall every morning last semester.

Be glad to be alive, because you can never know what day is your last.

I work about 5 minutes from that bridge (at the U).. and have gone over it countless times..
My bestfriend was about to be driving over it, but decided to be nice and pick me up from work instead (exited the highway the exit right before the bridge, sat on the off ramp for ~10 minutes).. We drove on the bridge parallel to it at about 6:15 (6 minutes after it happened) and saw the destruction. It was pretty brutal.
We worked out the timing, and she would have been right over it, or within a minute (in bumper to bumper traffic) of either side of it.. Crazy shit.

People who were on the bridge when it happened said between 20-30 cars fell _into_ the river... I only saw a handful in the river, so they all sunk pretty fast.. None of those guys made it.

That shit is messed up. It just goes to show you, you never know when it is your time. I would love to see what they find to be the cause of this, and who is going to take the blame.

I saw it last night when I was trying to check out So You Think You Can Dance and saw that the news was on. For a second I didn't realize this was happening HERE (Minneapolis) and then it was so unbelievable...and yeah I would think it's a new-enough bridge that it wouldn't just FALL DOWN.

I'm from New Orleans originally and I used to drive across that old bridge (the Huey P. Long bridge) and not only is it old but it looks like it's made for one lane each way...but they painted a line down the middle and made it for two. Scariest bridge in the US I think. But surprisingly IT never fell down...

Yeah, fuck that.

Damn, a lot of us from Minneapolis here.

I too took that bridge several times per week visiting clients and what not. Luckily it seems traffic wasn't that bad as it was detoured around the Twin Cities this morning. I got downtown just fine.
