Help with starting a blog

Hey there.

Being new to this site, I'm not sure what I should expect in response to this thread. Anyways...

Over the last couple of years, I have attempted to create various Wordpress Blogs, and failed miserably. The Wordpress Blogs were to do with things such as learning to program online; technology etc... (The blogs are no longer online)

Having absolutely no success with these blogs, barely receiving more than 10 uniques a WEEK, I gave up.

No, I'm thinking of starting up a new blog; a tutorial blog.

My question is, what should i write about? What would you consider to be a good niche to write in? Do you have any tips on how to go about acquiring traffic (I'm on a low budget) and monetizing the blog successfully?

Please share your past experiences.

1. Post in the newbie section, as you'll most likely get more responses.

2. If you want to make money within 3 months, then don't create a site based on "emotions" or based on some hunch that you "think" it will bring you traffic...you "think" it will make you money - because if you do, then you'll most likely fail again. You need to build sites based around search volume. The first step you should take is to find a niche. I like to use Google Keyword External. I put "one word" terms into KE - words like dog...cat...money...etc (use your imagination) Google will then return tons of high volume search terms within those niches. (NOTE: Make sure you select EXACT match.) And if you are monetizing with Adcents, then make sure the CPC column is selected, as you will want to pick a niche with high CPC.

3. Put keywords in title, build backlinks with your keywords as anchor text, and build links like a madman. Study everything you can about SEO.

4. If you want this badly enough, you'll eventually get it. 97% of people fail and never do anything to learn from their mistakes. They're just lazy bastards who run around and say "Making money on the interwebz iz a skam"

Don't be the other 97%.
 
If it's a personal blog, why would you even care about traffic? You should be writing because you enjoy it. Now you've lost all the content from those other blogs and the site age that came with them.

As far as content writing goes for blogs and getting traffic, you might like reading a post I wrote on my blog a few months back, Writing Web Content - Web Content Writing Tips That Work .

See what I did there? Having written some useful stuff on my blog, I was able to drop a link to it because it was relevant to your situation. Now I'll probably end up getting about 10 visits today because others will have read this post and wanted to check it out.

That's how blogs get popular. You write some useful posts, pass it along on other blogs/forums and people like it. Then they will drop your links in a similar fashion if they liked what they found.

Write about what you enjoy, and because you want too. You'll keep losing interest otherwise, and as a result will have wasted time you could have been using in another niche. If the blog gets popular, toss some paid advertising spots on there. I'm sure you've seen those on other blogs.
 
You are obviously deciding to blog purley to make some money, rather than because you have a passion for the subject.
Now im not some WaFo prat that says you have to give a shit about whatever you are promoting, but when it comes to blogs its important.

Mainly because its a pretty time consuming job to make a successful blog.
If you are just looking for money making opportunities, look into something else.

I actually do have a passion for it, I don't know what I said in my post that made you think otherwise.

Think of the things that you are good at then think of the things you are interested at.
Then look for the things that other people what to read or want to know.
That could give you and insight of what kind of niche should you make.

There are many ways to see some success with blogging.

You mention that you want to do a tutorial site. Is there something that you are passionate about that you could teach? I mean something that will keep your interest long enough for you to see success?

There are an infinite amount of subjects that could be taught. However, if it is something you are passionate about, and you are doing the writing- it will definitely reflect in your writing and your audience will see it.

As for monetization, again there are many ways to monetize a blog. Think Amazon affiliate (unlimited niches there), adsense, other niche related affiliate programs.

Then there is traffic. You need eye balls on your blog. There are many ways to do that too with a limited budget (been there-done that). If you enjoy writing about your topic-again it will help. Try article marketing to draw traffic to your blog. social bookmarking, forum posting, etc- all free, just time consuming.

Anyway, hope this helps a bit.

If you really have a lot of time to write, follow this plan:

Open Google's keyword tool. Generate a list of at least 500 keywords related to your overall topic, e.g. technology. Check each one in Google trends. Discard all that aren't trending up. Write an article for each keyword that is left of at least 300 words, including the keyword a few times - do the titles and headers too. Once you've done that set of keywords, repeat with a new set.

I've seen this working...just takes time and effort.
