Hello,

I've just setup a new site/business selling jewellery. As I am just starting up I couldn't afford a fancy online shop but (as I'm a programmer) I've kind of worked out a checkout of my own and a method for receiving payment (based on PayPal invoices). What would be REALLY useful is a bit of feedback on the system and the process and the help page that goes with it (and obviously any other feedback!!).

The site is www.harribella.co.uk

The check out can be accessed via any of the product pages, I won't give too much detail because I need you to see if its self-explanatory!! The help page can be accessed at www.harribella.co.uk/i_payment.asp

Any feedback or advise will be gratefully received.

Thanks

Russ

site looks good, easy to navigate.

i would recommend a " show cart" button, so you could verify an item was added.
that would be useful if someone decided to continue shopping, instead of just buying one thing and checking out.

good luck with it, i'm putting together a site for a Nikken magnetic jewelry reseller next week.

was there any reason you decided to go with a pop-up instead of a regualr redirect to a cart.
some pop-up blockers may kill that window

Thanks for the feedback. I've got a view basket option beneath each item (next to add to basket) but I've been toying with adding a link in the top or left nav so its accessible from each page.

The popup point is also a good one, I think I may have a bit of a redesign of that (already!!) and keep it in the main window. I could then have more than 5 options as well. The main reason for the pop up originally was to keep the user in the same place and not make them navigate away from the basket. I agree though, they can be a pain!

Take it easy!!

I agree with last post. I think the pop-up is not the best of ideas. I do really like the enlarded photos. They are actually big enough to see good details, something many shopping sites don't do.

I'm definately going to work on the checkout. The popups will go. I've just been looking into the PayPal checkout solution and that looks like a step up from what I've got. Does anyone have any opinions on that as a solution??

Thanks
Russ

My experience has shown that taking actual photos of the jewelry will help you sell 10X as much. Putting these graphics isnt going to push much. People want to see what they really look like. Hope that helped.

Thanks for that but all the pictures on the site were taken by me and are photos of the actual jewellery, do they not look real then?? Not sure I understand what you've said!! I took photos of each piece, made a small version for the pages and a large version for the full size popup. I had to touch them up in photoshop to remove some flash glare and I've added a drop shadow to each one to make it stand out more but thats all I've done.

If you could give me a bit more info I'd be grateful!!

Hello again!!
I've now changed the site to use the PayPal checkout solution, this is the one where you generate the add to basket and checkout code using a series of forms in PayPal and then add them to the site. This looks to me like a much better solution than I had before but I'm still not 100% convinced. It looks and behaves better and removes the need for me to manually generate PayPal invoices but still not ideal.

Thanks also for the suggestion for using models to get better pictures. I'm affraid to say I did try that with my wife but the results we're too good. I think you would need much better equipment (lights, camera, studio) than a 6 meg HP camera and a spotlight!! I'll keep try other options though and see what I can acheive

Thanks
Russ
