An Overview of Eye Allergies and Effective Eye Care Products
Eyesare an easy target for many allergies compared to any other part of the body because when they are opened, the conjunctiva of the eye directly interfaces with the environment. Filtering system such as cilia or hairs is commonly found in nose but there is no such system in case of eyes. Ocular or eye allergies affect the conjunctiva, which is a layer of skin and is commonly referred to as allergic conjunctivitis. Allergens in the conjunctiva cause the antibodies which are responsible for allergy to coat numerous mast cells. These mast cells when exposed to the allergen are prompted to release mediators like histamine which causes a burning sensation, itching and runny eyes. The eyelids may swell sometimes to the point of closing together. Typically, both eyes are affected but occasionally, only one eye is involved and in this case, mast cells release more histamine.
