Yes it happens everyday. The smart machines are now in charge, and they communicate with each other.

The problems with machines is that they do not listen to excuses, neither will they entertain pity. They look for patterns, and that my people is how they rule ranking results.

Matt Cutts is still around, but he can work from anywhere and everywhere.

Matt Cutts was always just a ceremonial figurehead and doesn't really have any real influence on Google's search algorithm. It's already been proven here that all his job was, was to spread around disinformation.

I wish more people really understood the difference between his real position and the perceived position he wants us all to believe.

Google actually announced in the last days off May that Cutts will be replaced in July.

And they rolled out several updates already, with Penguin update coming soon, so Matt's absence means nothing, he was not the one to push the buttons, he was just a speaking head.

He was "replaced" by Gary Illyes and John Mueller. Neither of them answer questions directly, if at all. They hold "webmaster hangouts" on G+ like once a week to provide gossip for all of the SEO blogs to write about.

The last Penguin was probably in December, and the last Panda was October; see Algoroo . Illyes said that a Panda refresh was coming this month, but they probably don't really even know.

Uhhh..... there's a difference between actual updates to their algorithm vs. manual reviews/re-running filter.

Also yea, there's still updates and I think there's been about 3-5 confirmed ones from Google since he left (off the top of my head). The latest suspected update was in late May where Google said they made updates to the core algorithm and not just updating new Penguin/Panda.

Where the SEO's at?

Totally respect your opinion but I disagree. Matt Cutts actually started with helping people out of his free time at Google (going off memory I think it was his 20% time that Google uses).

I think with every video of his you have to read between the lines, I don't think it's just there for misinformation. His general philosophy was focus on the onpage best practices and push off anyone that talked about linkbuilding, all while showing Google in the best possible light.

Edit:
At the same time, I'm not saying they're just for good like their slogan says. One big area I always talk about is profit going up in Adwords after the big Penguin/Panda releases and from my opinion quality going down.

Yeah you're right that it wasn't total disinformation. But he certainly doesn't mention everything. Like the fact that nofollow backlinks work. Overall I don't think it's a bad thing for Matt Cutts to play the role he did.

I tend to disagree. On many occassions his Webmaster videos and Mueller's hangouts have been the single best source of information when my own testing didn't show conclusive results. You just have to ignore all the general "only focus on UX/content is king" BS, but when they go into the technical aspects they're pretty much always on point IMO. Disagree with you about the nofollow links BTW.

Personally I hate to see him go. You'll always have the whiners who say Google is evil and destroys small businesses (like it isn't a zero-sum game with winners as well), but at least he seemed to be a good guy at heart and the information stream was a lot clearer. It's a total mess now Mueller and Illyes are their sole spokemen.

Google Has New Head Of Web Spam But Won't Be The "New Matt Cutts"

Matt Cutts remains on leave, but Search Engine Land can report that Google does have someone new in his position of head of web spam fighting. This person is unlikely, however, to become the all-around spokesperson on publisher and webmaster issues that Cutts had been.

Cutts headed Google’s web spam team that fights spam in its search listings for 10 years, until taking leave last July. He extended that leave last October and still remains on it. That doesn’t mean, however, that no one is minding the spam fighting team.

Google declined to name the person who has taken over Cutts’s role. The reason is simple. That person isn’t also assuming the other role that Cutts had played, that of being a general spokesperson about listing issues.

In his time at Google, Cutts was an incredibly popular figure with many SEOs and publishers who looked to him for advice on how to be better found within Google. He also became a lightning rod for others who were unhappy with Google’s policies relating to listings.

It was never the case that the head of web spam should also be a general spokesperson on listing issues. That was just a natural synergy between Cutts being both knowledgeable about Google’s listing processes in general and his personal interest in taking that role.

Going forward, Google says to continue to expect what’s already been happening while Cutts has been away. Various individual Googlers will keep splitting the role of providing advice and answers to SEOs and publishers in online forums, conferences and other places.

I hope Google soon attempts another ill fated social media thing so they focus less on search.

The best times for webspammers was when Google were extremely focused on rolling out G+.

I always liked Matt. Or at least his public persona. I hope to one day pound jager bombs with him and discuss the good ole days. I'd really like to know what they thought about SGW internally, not just the not so thinly veiled references to it in the search insights blog.
