I remember years ago when this holiday was actually fun. You could actually buy fireworks at a fireworks stand and light them off at night with your friends and family.
Then someone's roof caught on fire one night and every city decided lighting off fireworks was no longer going to be allowed.
And now, just like everything else in this fucked up country, the holiday has been ruined.

Yes its a relative term. I knew an old time racing instructor who was a tunnel rat in Nam. As you probably know that meant he was lowered head first into pitch black NVA tunnels with his 45 in his teeth... Imagine actually doing that day after day for a few months. Imo that is worthy of respect if not outright awe.
Except the Vietnamese never threatened anyone's freedom, yeah.
I feel bad that people are motivated to go to other people's countries and blow shit up and shoot people.
I realize the rationale for every war is to "protect our way of life" but the truth is, wars are fought for money, power and territory.
A distinction without a difference. You're not a brave GI climbing into tunnels if you're not in a war started by old white men who want to dominate brown people with violence and death.
A deluded soldier isn't a dishonest one. At least from my personal encounters, and documentaries, infantry soldiers aren't on average very intelligent. They sincerely believe they are fighting for their family and their family's territory.
I'm not disagreeing with this, but isn't that a little bit concerning considering we're giving them deadly weapons and sending them into cities? Maybe that's why 1 million have been killed in Iraq.
