Hacker Issues

Have you ever been hacked or know someone who has ?! Was it bad, how do you deal with it ?!

I'm designing a membership site and all the "database injection" and "unsafe sessions" talk is killing me...

I don't really bother to really bulletproof it unless I think it has the potential to be big and have a lot of users, or the database will be large and an injection attack will really hurt me.

But when I did have to do that stuff, it was a royal pain in the ass.

One host I was on had their servers hacked via a phpbb vulnerablility. This was a while ago but they changed the front pages on all the sites hosted on the server.

It took a little while befrore everything was resolved, a few days as I recall and longer than I would have liked, but the host managed to restore everything.

Frustrating as I wsn;t even running phpbb

My work web site server was hacked once. Suddenly found bandwidth use increased by about 20 times normal use. Did some looking and it was being used as a file server.

The cause was an unpatched linux box.

Lesson learnt there!

If you use phpbb you're just asking to be hacked. It's the most hacked software on the planet.
