Im putting together a more or less legitimate site and would like some basic contact in the footer, it appeals to a national audience so I dont need a physical address, a po box is good enough, a phone number would perhaps be needed. Is google voice a good option for this? Would you tie it together with an email you had for other ventures? Would you link it to your cell phone or a home number?

It depends on whether you really want to take phone calls or just want to appear to. If you want to appear to and have them leave voicemails, then you can use Google Voice, verify it with a number, then uncheck the number in the settings so calls will NOT be forwarded to that number. That way they will always leave a voicemail.

If you want to take phone calls, it make sense to tie it a number that you will be able to pick up easily. In fact, you can set it so the Google Voice number calls you and not the person - then make a specific contact in your cellphone for that Google number, so when you see that number ringing you'll know it's a customer from the website.

FYI, you can only tie one phone number to one Google phone. Even if you uncheck it, you can't use it on another Google Voice - this is info from the last time i setup one about a year or two ago.

Don't try and use Google Voice to verify another Google product though, like Google Places. And don't try to use it for Craigslist/Facebook or some other stuff. The majors have those number flagged.
