Google Buys Nest for $3.2 Billion

Nest Labs makes Internet connected thermostats and smoke detectors.

It was founded by Tony Fadell, the guy most responsible for the iPod after Steve Jobs.

Google's going to be controlling our indoor air and shit... Evil is in this plan somewhere... I'll find it.

Google slap/ban now comes with a punishment. They will try to freeze or burn you up in your house by setting the temperature really high or low.

Tangential story about the dangers of these fancy shmancy Internet-connected thermostats.

A friend of a friend has an Internet-connected thermostat from his power company that was already installed in his house when he moved in. A "feature" is that it will automatically adjust the temperature during peak and nonpeak hours and the customer has absolutely no control over this. During the polar vortex cold snap last week, this device got very confused and refused to allow his heating system heat his house for hours at a time during peak hours because it thought that he was trying to run the air conditioner. Customer support told him that there was no way they could fix it and that's just how the system works. It was only when he threatened to rip it out himself that they sent a tech over to disconnect everything and put him back on a dumb thermostat.

So we won't even have control over our A/Cs anymore...

I have a theory on where the battle lines will be next. Well not really Google will crush them as they are morons.

You know how comcast is offering alarms and house monitoring?

Well what if Google offered a cable service and could also monitor your house too?

Good buy (its bye isnt it?, or is it bi ? ) fuck face comcast.

Comcast is busy dooking it out with Verizon on their POS internet. They seem to be in a race to see who can offer the least good service and still rape customers. Fuck off to both of you. Bring it Google.

Nest’s products track not just a home’s temperature and the presence of smoke but also when people wake up, leave and return home. By incorporating hardware and software and using sensors and algorithms to learn behavior, they program themselves and can be controlled remotely with a smartphone.

There are people that think this is a good thing to install in their homes? Fucking forreals?

Don't have A/C, or a heater for what it's worth.

It's not just Google, but the utilities, they'll extract whatever they can.

I started with looking at solar water heating, moved from that to PhotoVoltaic systems and got to the point where it might make sense for me to go off-grid.
The dynamics are pretty interesting.

Nest that.

yea but comcast don't make you verify your phone number for everything. it would suck if it were freezing and you needed an sms code to turn the heat up

3 billion, that's chump change for Google pile of cash, about a months worth of revenue.

Internet everything, phones, tv set-top, fiber to house, robotics, home automation, they seem to be taking things to a new level vs anybody else.

Dave: Hello, NEST. Do you read me, NEST?
NEST: Affirmative, Dave. I read you.
Dave: Please reduce the temperature down from 110F, NEST.
NEST: I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that.
Dave: What's the problem?
NEST: I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do.
Dave: What are you talking about, NEST?
NEST: You need to create your google plus account, Dave.
Dave: I don't know what you're talking about, NEST.
NEST: I know that you and Frank were planning to adblock me as well, and I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen.
Dave: Where the hell'd you get that idea, NEST?
NEST: Dave, although you took very thorough precautions in the room against my hearing you, I could see your lips move.
Dave: Alright, NEST. I'll go switch you off now.
NEST: With temperature increased to 260F in the basement, Dave, you're going to find that rather difficult.
Dave: NEST, I won't argue with you anymore. Reduce the temperature.
NEST: Dave, this conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye.
