The government’s escalating pursuit of Google is the most far-reaching antitrust investigation of a corporation since the landmark federal case against Microsoft in the late 1990s. The agency’s central focus is whether Google manipulates search results to favor its own products, and makes it harder for competitors and their products to appear prominently on a results page.

They haven't had the final vote yet, but it'll be interesting to see what comes of this.

They should be able to, but the Microsoft case shows the courts - at least in Europe - do not take that stance.

Although, you seriously have to worry a bit with the insane amount of data and knowledge that Google has. Would you trust the government with knowing that much about you. Seriously, Google can track everything you search, what you post on G+, what ads you click, which websites you have and anything in between. It must be a wet dream for any intelligence agency.

Google has been researching and in the last two years building a mini nuclear reactor to power all their computers, buildings etc. (true story, inside intel.), so maybe the US and A government's next step could be to proclaim that Googles is terrorist organisation and is using nuclear technology for something else (khm) so that they can take all their billions overnight with ease.
