Can anyone recommend any authoritative books on either of these two subjects? I hit the Walden books today and couldnt find shit, I was almost forced to buy a book on CSS just for the hell of it, but after paging through it I was fairly sure I could have wrote a better book.

Kind of pissed me off, its a pretty big big book store in a pretty big mall, you would think they would at least have something on one of those subjects. Because of it buying something productive today when out the window, instead I ended up with some new Air Jordans and a cheep watch.

Im really looking for a complete book on each of the subjects, nothing like learn PHP in 24 hours, or AJAX for dummies, Any suggestions?

<edit>BTW Goog=Good :), being able to take a dump and post at the same time is a skill I have yet to master:)</edit>

I've read teach yourself php in 10 minutes. Currently I'm reading programming php. there is also php cookbook and another I'll add later I have to go and find it.

Myself and another member were considering starting a group reading effort so we could build together as we read and learn. I'm only doing 10 pages a day.. I should be finished in about a month or so. it would be great if your interested

I'll probably pick up teach yourself php in 24 hours too. Lynda has some good videos as well. There is this one AJAX book it's yellow and black I can't think of the name but hopefully I'll find it and post it too

When teaching myself PHP I found that using online tutorials was the best for learning. Don't ask me where cause it was too long ago.

Having said that I also keep a couple of reference type books from o'reilly
PHP Pocket Reference and PHP Cookbook.

This is basically what I am looking for are complete reference guides to each subject. I may just order that PHP mySQL for dynamic websites tomorrow.

I would recommend the same to anyone, learn by doing, but it is also good to read and have a few good references at hand while learning.

Advanced PHP is a good book. It's not a learn the language book, but once you have a handle on basic php, it lays the ground work for how to structure your application to take you beyond a simple/basic application architecture.

He also covers a lot of ground, from revision control to debugging to performance concerns.
